Aww,I love Beetlejuice

So you want a critique. I took an art appreciation class as a college sophomore back in 1972. I learned the difference between oil painting, watercolor, tempura, etc. I’m as qualified to critique art as I am to be a nurse after taking a CPR class.

But I will try to sound like an educated, discerning observer.

It looks like colored pencil. I like how you took the stripe theme of Beetlejuice’s suit and worked it into the crazy quilt plaid background. It reinforces the whole crazy outlandish way he thinks and behaves.

Lydia looks very endearing and petite--less goth than she did on the show--but that’s okay. It’s part of your style, with the big eyes and small delicate fingers--like you do with your Kim Possible and Hanna Montana characters. The bright colors, like her pink clothing and his purple shirt give the picture a fun exuberant feel. And yet you put the spider web pattern in her clothes, to remind us she is not a conventional kind of girl.

I love the shimmering highlights in Lydia’s hair, and the twinkle in her eyes. And especially the luster in her lips. In a word, she looks-sweet. Goth sweet. She looks at him with obvious affection and admiration.

If I may state an opinion--whether you meant to or not--you took some of the appealing charm from some other Tim Burton heroines--Sally from “Nightmare before Christmas”, Emily from “The Corpse Bride” and even Kim from “Edward Scisorhands”.

I love the shading on Beetlejuice’s forehead--and the mad green-tinged eyes. He is an evident slob, with the loose tie and the open shirt collar. The weird floaty hair and red-tinted fingertips add just a hint of the haunting spectral touch

You took a helping of your “Loliver” sugary sweetness and stirred it into the mixture for this pic--not too much--just a small teaspoon.

I’m trying to sound dispassionate and neutral. It’s not succeeding. I’m a fan of your work. I like this picture.

P.S.
BTW--I should add--one may write an official critique only if one is a paying member of dA. And I am too frugal for that.

Wow, I don't know what to say, you really did a great job analyzing my picture.
Thanks so much, your comment inspired me a lot!
Wanna draw now ;)
